BTTM FDRS

The 2019 graphic novel BTTM FDRS finds its monster in the legacy of gentrification and exploitation, with beautiful ideas twisted and then abandoned, and the people on the lower rungs of society left to deal with the resulting mess. Writer Ezra Claytan Daniels (author of 2018’s Upgrade Soul) and artist Ben Passmore (creator of numerous comics across mediums including the completely unsparing Sports Is Hell) make no bones about the racial make-up of both sides of that equation, showing its black protagonists putting up with the indifference and hostility of white people in positions of relative power, something used as both a source of horror and of comedy. This is a story that reflects a wider recognition of social stratification, a heady mix of self-consciousness, guilt and anger, and that complexity puts it well beyond just a simple vehicle for social critique and a side of the grotesque—although it is also both of those things, rather pointedly.

Pulse (1988)

The idea that our increasingly technological lives set us up for trouble has been a recurring theme since the twentieth century (and probably before that), updating itself whenever some new convenience becomes entrenched in the routine of the average westerner. Pulse is the late eighties version of this, set in a home with such advanced appliances as VCRs, microwaves, and air conditioning units, all things that can be turned against us when under the influence of something sinister. In the mind of the devoted Luddite, our homes used to be a solidly independent thing of wood and stone, but the advent of appliances not only makes people overly reliant on them, but invites an outside presence that we do not even understand, let alone know how to control. In this case, the presence takes the form of a malevolently intelligent jolt of electricity, something that can undermine the entire modern home—it’s another high concept horror, but one with a surprising amount on its mind, fanning out not just into the technological aspects of contemporary living, but with a specifically eighties critique of suburbia.

“Don’t Open Till Doomsday” (S1E17)

This is the third episode in a row written by Joseph Stefano that I’ve covered, and here he’s teamed up again with director Gerd Oswald to demonstrate some of the unexpected places The Outer Limits can go. Conceptually, this is the single most bizarre episode of the series that I’ve written about, one that still nominally roots itself in Sci-Fi concept, but focuses more on the strange imagery and a human drama that somehow manages to feel both understandable and completely outlandish, gleefully skating around the edges of melodrama. If we didn’t get some manner of explanation near the end, the concept would work just as well as a piece of Weird Fiction bordering on horror, but this is one of the few cases where explaining something actually makes it even stranger.
